한미우호협회(회장 황진하)는 2025년 한 해의 마무리 행사로 주한미군들의 한반도 방위를 위한 노고를 치하·위로하고, 내년 한미동맹 및 우호증진을 위해 나아가야 할 방향을 조망하기 위해 12월 2일 웨스틴 조선 서울 호텔 그랜드볼룸에서 ‘2025 한미우호의 밤’을 개최하였으며, 주한미군장병과 협회 회원 및 후원사, 유관기관 및 단체 등 각계각층에서 참가하였다.

The year-end party for the Korea America Friendship Society (KAFS) was held at Westin Josun Seoul on Dec. 2. I was invited to the dinner meeting as a member of the Korea-America Association. Watching the whole sequence of well-organized events proceed, I am glad to share some happy feelings from KAFS’ 34th annual yuletide function.
It was a thoughtful evening, considering the participating dignitaries from both sides, notably from the American participants. Korean participants included Sohn Kyung-shik, the chairman of KAFS; Hwang Jin-ha, KAFS president; Kim Kei-joo, the chair of event preparation; and Kang Yun-jin, vice minister of patriots and veterans affairs. American participants included Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander of the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK); James R. Heller, deputy chief of mission for the U.S. Embassy; and Lt. Gen. Joseph E. Hilbert, commander of the Eighth U.S. Army.
The resolute orations delivered by participating speakers were powerful and meaningful, redefining the 72-year-old Korea-U.S. military alliance as it becomes stronger and more future-oriented. This is important in a time of hostility amidst a standoff with North Korea, understanding that we must expand cultural, social, economic and technological cooperation and coordination between the two nations, including in shipbuilding, automobiles, artificial intelligence chips and semiconductors.
The recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was applauded several times as a model example of a multinational success story. I learned from Heller’s comments that the coming year would mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. I understand that 2026 also marks the 250th anniversary of the inauguration of the U.S. Army, on a day that also happens to be President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
It was peaceful to listen to the solemn blessing by Col. Kim Hyeon-joong, chaplain of USFK, for the future of the Korea-U.S. friendship.
The annual music program was quite colorful and beautiful. The Children’s Choir of the Far East Broadcasting Company was established in 1991, the same year as KAFS. They enthusiastically performed songs ranging from “God Bless America” to “Amazing Grace.” Soprano Lee Seung’s renditions of “Song of my Hometown” and “You Raise Me Up,” accompanied on the harmonica by Oh Hyun-gu, former first corps commander, were popular with the audience. The Seoul Chamber Piano Quintet’s performance of “Silent Night” made for a passionate finale.
To sum up the KAFS’s 2025 event, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the important tasks and duties of civic organizations to create an amicable relationship between Korea and the United States. We should bond together not only to strengthen our 143-year-old diplomatic partnership, but also reinforce the 72-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty and safeguard the Korean Peninsula from potential regional threats. Korea and the United States, let’s go forward together.

이번 행사는 특히 미측 인사를 포함한 양국 주요 인사들을 세심하게 배려한 뜻깊은 자리였다. 한국 측 참석자로는 손경식 한미우호협회 이사장, 황진하 회장, 김계주 행사준비위원장, 그리고 강윤진 국가보훈부 차관이 함께했다. 미국 측에서는 제이비어 T. 브런슨 주한미군사령관, 제임스 R. 헬러 주한미국대사관 공관차석, 그리고 조지프 E. 힐버트 미8군 사령관이 참석했다.
참석 연사들의 단호하면서도 울림 있는 연설은 강력하고 의미심장했으며, 72년 역사의 한미 군사동맹을 더욱 굳건하고 미래지향적인 동맹으로 재정의하는 계기가 되었다. 이는 북한과의 대치 속에서 긴장이 지속되는 현 시점에서 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 우리는 조선·자동차·인공지능 칩·반도체 등 다양한 분야를 포함해 문화·사회·경제·기술 전반에 걸친 한미 간 협력과 공조를 더욱 확대해야 한다는 점을 다시금 인식하게 된다.
최근 개최된 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의는 다자 외교의 성공적인 모범 사례로 여러 차례 찬사를 받았다. 헬러 공관차석의 발언을 통해 필자는 내년이 미국 독립 250주년이라는 사실도 알게 되었다. 또한 2026년은 미 육군 창설 250주년이 되는 해이기도 하며, 이 날은 공교롭게도 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 80번째 생일과 같은 날이기도 하다.
주한미군 군종목사인 김현중 대령이 한미 우정의 미래를 위해 드린 장엄한 축복 기도는 평온하고 경건한 감동을 안겨주었다.
매년 진행되는 음악 프로그램 역시 다채롭고 아름다웠다. 극동방송 어린이 합창단은 KAFS와 같은 해인 1991년에 창단되었으며, ‘God Bless America’부터 ‘Amazing Grace’에 이르기까지 열정적인 무대를 선보였다. 이승 소프라노가 ‘고향의 노래’와 ‘O Holy Night'을 부르고, 전 제1군단장 오현구 장군이 'You Raise Me Up'와 Carol Medley'를 하모니카로 연주한 무대는 관객들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었다. 서울 체임버 피아노 퀸텟의 ‘고요한 밤’ 연주는 감동적인 피날레를 장식했다.
2025년 KAFS 행사를 종합해보며, 필자는 이 자리를 빌려 한미 간 우호 증진을 위해 시민단체가 수행해야 할 중요한 역할과 책무를 다시 한 번 강조하고자 한다. 우리는 143년의 외교적 동반자 관계를 더욱 공고히 하는 데 그치지 않고, 72년의 한미상호방위조약을 굳건히 하여 한반도를 잠재적인 역내 위협으로부터 지켜나가야 한다. 대한민국과 미국은 앞으로도 함께 나아가야 할 것이다.
